A Golfer’s Guide to Royal Troon and the Ayrshire Open Championship Coast
Ayrshire’s coastline holds one of the highest concentrations of Open Championship golf anywhere in the world. Royal Troon, host of the 2024 Open, sits at the heart of it, alongside Prestwick — the birthplace of the Open Championship itself — and a run of links courses that draw golfers from across the globe.
Royal Troon: The Home of the 2024 Open
Royal Troon’s Old Course is one of golf’s great tests — the par-3 8th, known as the Postage Stamp, is one of the most famous short holes in the sport, notoriously small and heavily bunkered. The club also has a Portland course, a slightly gentler but still testing links.
Visitor access varies by season and club policy, so it is worth checking directly with the club well ahead of a trip, particularly around Open Championship years when access can be more restricted.
The Wider Ayrshire Links
Troon is not a solo attraction. Prestwick Golf Club, a few miles down the coast, hosted the very first Open Championship in 1860 and remains a classic, characterful links. Further south, Turnberry adds another world-class course to the same stretch of coastline, and inland, Kilmarnock (Barassie) offers a slightly less exclusive but still excellent round.
For golfers building a multi-course trip, the whole area from Troon down through Prestwick and towards Ayr can realistically be covered across a few days without much travel between rounds.
Getting from Glasgow Airport to Troon
Troon is around 35 miles from Glasgow Airport, with a drive of roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic through Paisley and along the A77. That makes it one of the more convenient golf destinations on the west coast — close enough for a same-day arrival and first tee time, provided luggage and clubs are accounted for.
Travelling with Golf Clubs
- Space matters: golf bags need a suitably sized vehicle, particularly for groups — worth confirming when booking a transfer.
- Timing tee times: build in a buffer after landing for baggage reclaim, especially with oversized sports equipment.
- Multiple courses: if your trip covers Troon, Prestwick and Ayr in the same visit, a single fixed-price transfer plan across the stay is usually simpler than arranging separate journeys.
Getting There
A direct taxi transfer avoids the hassle of handling golf clubs across public transport connections, and lets you land, collect your bags and head straight for the coast. We plan the pickup around your flight and can accommodate group travel and golf equipment.
Troon sits close to Ayr, which has its own dedicated route page covering the wider area, including Prestwick and Kilmarnock. If your trip includes a different Ayrshire golf resort, our guide to Trump Turnberry covers that route separately.
Final Thoughts
Few stretches of coastline anywhere in the world pack in this much championship golf history. Troon is a natural base for exploring it, and close enough to Glasgow Airport that the travel barely eats into the trip.
